Social Enterprise

At the Bell Island Support Network (BISN), we are excited to introduce our Cooking Program Social Enterprise, which started in July 2024, an innovative initiative designed to empower clients of our peer support network with essential culinary skills. This program provides hands-on training in cooking, food handling, and kitchen etiquette, while also offering opportunities for participants to showcase their talents and earn income by selling baked goods at local cafes in St. John's.

Program Highlights:

Culinary Training: Participants learn the art of cooking, from basic techniques to advanced recipes, under the guidance of our experienced chef. The program covers essential skills such as meal preparation, safe food handling, and kitchen hygiene.

Food Handling Certification: Clients receive training that prepares them for food handling certification, an important credential for those interested in pursuing careers in the culinary and hospitality industries.

Kitchen Etiquette: Participants gain a deep understanding of professional kitchen etiquette, including teamwork, communication, and organization, which are crucial for success in any culinary environment.

Social Enterprise: The program features a unique social enterprise component where clients can apply their skills by baking and selling delicious goods. These treats are made available at various local cafes in St. John's, providing a source of income and real-world experience for participants.

Benefits for Clients:

Skill Development: The program equips clients with valuable skills that can open doors to employment opportunities in the culinary field.

Confidence and Empowerment: By mastering new skills and achieving food handling certification, participants gain confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

Income Generation: The social enterprise aspect allows clients to earn income through the sale of their baked goods, fostering financial independence and entrepreneurial spirit.

Community Connection: Selling baked goods at local cafes helps bridge the gap between Bell Island and the broader St. John's community, promoting integration and reducing stigma around addictions and recovery.

Join us in supporting this transformative program and be a part of creating a brighter future for our community members. Your patronage at participating cafes and donations to BISN help make this initiative possible, enabling us to continue providing essential services and opportunities for growth.
